When Power in Numbers is 1+1

What I am about to write is far from new, it is actually quite closer to cliché: parenting is HARD. Single parenting...well, is there a new word we can coin for this? FUHARD. Catch my drift? But this post isn't about that (not to say I won't wax on about the hardships and the joys, the resentment and the triumphs at some point or another.) Today is about facing the realities and learning acceptance, but more importantly it's about finding kindred spirits a.k.a. a support system in any way shape or form. I have been reading Drea's blog since I was pregnant and facing the reality that I would be doing the bulk of the parenting on my own. The internet founded me many others who I could relate to, as life has since. Sometimes seeing the amount of women who are unintentionally single moms hurt my heart--but as the saying of the year (or of all time) goes-- "It is what it is." After yesterday's post, the current air of life, reading the comments from Drea's post today, and then finding this post about the wrenching aspects of single mamahood I thought it important to address the need to feel connected. I remember Addison's father telling me (while I was pregnant) that I was never alone because I had a baby with me always. His method of comforting me and offering me solace for his being largely absent did two things: it overwhelmed and made me realize that one doesn't need to be alone to feel lonely. When you are responsible for the care of another individual, you don't really feel like you are with company per se. There are days that it just gets lonely. I am Addison's caregiver and as much as she fills me with so much joy (it can be almost unbearable) it is also a job and like many jobs, it is often our colleagues that provide us with the kind of camaraderie necessary to make the days more meaningful. When parenting feels like a burden, or at least like the world on my shoulders I think of other parents, particularly other moms, and even more specifically other single moms, as my teammates. We are all partners in the game of raising lives and hopefully we are all in this to make those lives outstanding.

Mamas and papas-- it may not always offer you the comfort you need, but we are in this together and MORE IMPORTANTLY, you are in this with and for your child (or children). We are unsung heroes who get all the glory (hard won as it may be). There are times I have gotten so full of resentment I want to spit (and seriously, spitting is my ultimate pet peeve...or one of them) but there are times I seriously feel like a ROCKSTAR from the feats I manage to accomplish ALONE. There are days I feel like it/I /everything is not enough...but then I also realize, I am all my daughter needs provided I am whole and full of love. For everything beautiful I see in my daughter, I know that I am the water, the sun, the soil behind her blossoming. There are others who provide some light too, but I am the one on my knees getting dirty every day, and I am also the one who gets to reap the harvest. Mind all of the lame metaphors, I love following the imagery in my imagination.

The key--remember to store up strength and seek community in any way--even for fleeting moments of inspiration. It is all fuel. When I get around to sharing my birth story (which the telling is a story in itself) I will also recount that one of my favorite memories was holding Addison moments after her birth, Animal Collective's "My Girls" playing in the background, and me dreamily scanning the many faces who were there rooting me on and supporting me into my transformation into motherhood. The universe imprinted me and 'told' me, 'you will never be alone.' From that moment to now, that sentiment gave me the validation I needed to keep my chin up, even when it all gets so heavy.

Words to your Pre-Baby Self

I have been loving NPR's Baby Project and wish I had discovered it during my pregnancy. Those days were hectic, hard, and ultimately triumphant, but I secretly wish I could have spent more time basking in the pregnant experience and writing for something along the lines of what NPR has put together. A friend of mine (the talented Annemarie) shared this link on facebook and I became a tad emotional watching the video. Did anyone else find this moving or are hormones sifting back to me?

Some of my personal favorites: "Forgive yourself"; "This too shall pass"
(heck I have that tattooed on me!); "Trust your instincts"; "You are the expert"

I intended on creating this blog even before I had Addison, and for various reasons didn't launch here until she was five months old. My original focus was to write out the things no one told me before I had a baby, or more fittingly--the things you can't really prepare yourself for. I have a huge list that if I wasn't so wrapped up in life as a mama I could use for daily blog posts from now until December. Yet, I want to share so much more about the experience of parenthood and the interesting split that occurs when one is 'born' into a mother. I also want to pass on the myriad resources and inspirations I have found in my intense 'research' (or internet addiction) in hopes of helping others along the way. For me, the hardest part about transitioning into being a mother has been the identity crisis that came with it--particularly since I found myself entering the realm of single-parenting to boot. I still struggle with forgiveness in one shape or form, being kind to myself, and also coping with the fact that I am still essentially who I was before baby. There is quite a lot I wish I could tell my pregnant self, and so much wisdom given by others that I hold close to me still, but as the article details, you can't really know until you get there. I have narrowed my sentiments to the two posted here because they are pertinent to me and I think can transcend to any other mama out there.

What would your sign say?

First Food Fun/Fuss

Addison's first food experience...a face that reads:
'Why are you doing this to me?'
I am now addicted to making food for Addison and hope that this momentum can be harnessed and kept up during the school year. Some people seem a bit surprised that I want to make my own baby food, mostly because of the work that goes into it. Yes, there is ease in buying jars in the market, but I sincerely love knowing I put effort and love into what my baby eats. After months of exclusively breastfeeding (a feat in itself) I couldn't imagine myself not being equally diligent about the 'solid' foods my baby ingests. Thus I am carrying that effort forward and am finding so much joy in the actual simplicity, tastiness, and cost effectiveness of making her foods.

'I'd much rather eat my cute feet' Wouldn't you?
My go-to site for recipes has been Wholesome Baby Food which has some great advice, techniques, and recipes. For Addison's first 'meal' I chose to do a sweet potato puree (I have currently decided to skip over using any cereals since she is still predominantly receiving breast milk for her nutrition.) Right now introducing food to her is more about experimenting with textures, flavors, and color (!) Also, the feeding experience is another method of socialization and means for independence since I allow her some time to 'feed' herself. After day 1 I realized giving her the spoon meant she ate more....granted it also meant a longer sitting and a messier everything, but it also made for a happier baby.

Addison's first 'meal'= sweet potato puree

Now making the purees does take more work, heck, the entire process of feeding her is somewhat of a chore. With breastfeeding my biggest to-do involves getting comfortable. With feeding it involves opening the high chair, strapping in the baby, bibbing up the baby, setting up her food bowl, feeding or coaxing her to eat/letting her gnaw at the spoon, cleaning up. Phew. The plus side? I really love seeing her experience something new and as much as I cringe over mess, seeing a baby with food all over is super gooey cute.
Part of my first batch of food--stacked high with pride.
Aren't these food pots cute? A trial run of the Babies' R'Us brand. They claim
to be BPA free and also dishwasher/microwave safe though one was destroyed
day one after falling from the top of the dishwasher. A sacrifice to the food gods.

What I love about making her first foods has been the sense of accomplishment I have gotten. I am welled up with pride particularly because the actual methods are simple, there is literally one ingredient per meal, and I know EXACTLY what I am feeding her (which helps with disposing of her leftovers). I enjoy how fresh the meals are, and that I am saving a lot of money and waste by not using jars. So far, two sweet potatoes has made over 18 oz, 3/4 of a bag of frozen peas made 11 oz, and two small organic apples made 10 oz of food. I am terrible with any type of mathematical equation, but essentially the guesstimate cost of the latter is about $5. At this stage Addy only eats about 2oz a day, so this stash will last quite awhile as I introduce new foods.

By day two she took to the concept well and by five she started to enjoy food,
well, until day seven when I gave her apple sauce. I will have to snap a shot of
that twisted face.
SO there are a lot of sites I would like to recommend but I just can't find the ones one my mind, but here are two others I have been turning to for inspiration and support: Weelicious and Home Made Baby Food Recipes. If anyone has more suggestions in this realm, link up-- I love to add to my collection. xoxo and nom nom nom (making this sound will in fact make your baby want to eat!)

While writing this post I realized a few things: 1. I do a ton of research and often forget to bookmark as much as I would like to share...OR, if I do I am not as organized as I would like, so I don't know what is what 2. TIME FLIES so quickly and because I didn't start this blog as early as I would have liked, it's as if all of the new mama experiences I want to share are already passed. This blog will be somewhat of a retrospective (which also warms me up because I will relive those moments with more clarity and appreciation since they've past) 3. Solid food baby poop...whoooooooo. That might be it's own post

S.M.I.L.E//L.8: Babies have claws

Cute little baby hands seem harmless, sweet, soft, right? Suuuuure.
Today's lesson is one I keep relearning and adapting to. Baby finger nails are elusive and they are dangerous. They grow at alarming rates and  are attached to little squirmy worm wigglers who will look like Edward Scissorhands if you do not cut or file their nails every other day! Even those sneaky toe nails manage to mutilate the most unassuming little sausage legs.

For many new moms cutting nails is the stuff fears are made of. You will want to avoid doing this task, but if you do not face the challenge in a timely fashion people will wonder how many cats you own by the slices that will appear on you and your baby.

Baby nails are like kitty claws or talons that dig into you while nursing.
Not. Fun.

Word to the wise: have little baby friendly emery boards around for keeping the razors at bay.

Weekend Eye Candy (Past-due)

I am a bit behind here, but I had some great times this past weekend and have been such a busy mama as I spiral out into an obsessive frenzy of task attacking and projects mayhem in preparation for the school year starting. Thus, I need to stop, enjoy moments, and then reflect on how good life truly is.

Last Thursday was a day of mama milestones some low (court date for custody...grr) and some high (first night out without baby to go see The Flaming Lips, Weezer, and Yeasayer @PNC Bank Arts Center--wow is all I can say still!) All of the excitement from Thursday mixed with rainy weather Friday kept us in and super lazy. We made up for that over the next few days.

Saturday July 30th: Van Duzer Days part II! This week's was on the empty side and reminded me of the changing times as new faces were cropping up from every corner, but the weather was beautiful, music delightful, and of course it was great to be with some of my loveliest of local friends.

Baby "parking lot"
Hells yeah yarn bombs!
This place is becoming the local hot spot and now has a sound system to envy,
loves.
Local used book store run by my friend's mama. Awesome place!
Addy is already a music critic like her mama.
Local riot girl band "Plastiq Passion" rocked out. Addison was mesmerized.
I believe this was a joint effort. I know one artist is Nani Castle.
Mike Shane brings his work to the canvas! I super love this piece.
Sunday July 31st: Another Williamsburg day with the past-her-due-date-by-six-days and still walking around and radiant Lauren (who has since had her baby!!) We visited some adorable local shops (I even bought some seriously cute things at Crossroads Trading Co. aka my new favorite store) and spent a lot of time at the Brooklyn Art Library pouring through journals part of the Sketchbook Project. Addison loved all of the visual stimulation. While walking around we chatted up an older Polish woman whose sense of humor about motherhood and changing trends was so perfect.  Later we went back to Lauren's apartment, snacked, and watched Sex and the City 2 which Lauren fittingly declared was an eye-candy film. Since I was super exhausted I stopped at my favorite island (as in Staten) spot for a personal pizza and enjoyed the rest of the night snuggled with my baby girl. Love inspiring weekends!

One of my favorite pairs of shoes (which are sadly falling apart now)-- made by LAMB.
PROUST! Oddly added to a tapestry of African presidents inside a
WIlliamsburg bookstore. Mind me as I didn't take down any names
and don't feel like researching this late.
Sketchbooks of 2011! I definitely want to participate!!

This artist is from the UAE and created a jaw droppingly amazing litho
I think I drooled over this one. All papercuts and all superb.
If I felt like searching I could remember the original piece of
Dutch master art this is playing off of, but it is just so cute.
Want this for Addy so badly but not $52 bad.

I am so thankful for all of the experiences, people, music, and joy I get to share with my daughter. She loves to be involved in all of the action and soaks it all up. Life for us is about the inspiration and newness of the world around us. Love.

SIX MONTHS

The lotus of my life is now six months old.

Today is a milestone I chose to make a big deal out of for a few reasons. One being the concept of wrapping around the fact that my daughter is a half a year old!! The other two being that I decided to attempt food today (a sweet potato puree I made for her) and that since Addison is a winter baby I feel like it will be fun to celebrate her half birthday in the summer so that we can have outdoor excuses to be extra joyful.

Preparing for her first 'solid' food meal
Since I started this blog so 'late' into my stay-at-home-mommy stint (I go back to work in a month) I haven't gotten to let you 'know' my baby girl so here are some things about this amazing kid:
  • Addison was unpredictable and determined from the womb on. She is quirky, willful, and clearly her own person.
  • She photographs very differently, especially from birth to about three months. Sometimes I nail shots but it's uncanny how little photos do her justice.
  • She was sucking on her hands in the womb and is still doing so now. She gets the thumb from time to time and even adds some feet and toes to the mix as well.
  • She is a thinker and observer. People always commend how observant she is and it is striking to see her processing her environment.
  • Addison is a social butterfly who easily adapts to new places and experiences. She loves to be out and about exploring and taking in new sites. She is often complimented for her calm demeanor and her ease around people.
  • This lovely little one is a true comedian. Her timing is impeccable, she makes the silliest of faces, and does funny jigs that she knows crack me up.
  • She is loving. Addison is all about the kisses and cuddling.
  • She is mellow yet expressive. This baby lets her needs be known, but is really a cool and collected baby overall.
  • She makes sounds that border on pterodactyl, fairy, dolphin.
  • She seriously loves her feet.
  • She enjoys the Beatles and Bob Marley.
  • She is mesmerized by the iphone.
  • She has one of, if not THE GREATEST SMILE EVER. ever. Really. Cameras do no justice.
In short--this baby is all I could ever ask for, all that I need, and more than I could have imagined. The early days were very difficult, and some days are still trying, but I have been blessed with a baby who fits me so well. We are a nice little team already and I hope I can celebrate her in a way that shows how much I appreciate her and love her exponentially. Seriously this baby WOWS me.

One of those 'bad' photos that I just love

To celebrate her I sang her special songs, gave her extra love (like a ridiculous amount of hugs, kisses, and cuddles), made her first food and had a whole feeding spectacle twice today, dressed her up, made her some cute accessories for photo shoots, played a ton, bought her a mobile, bows, a raspberry teether (which she loves) and prepared for our picnic/concert that sadly got rained out-- which was fine because Addison just wanted to cuddle and nap on her mama (which means it's 11pm and she is awake) while mama finished season 3 of "Being Human" and ate three of her decadent homemade 'almost' vegan truffles. Simply fabulous.

First batch of food!! Two sweet potatoes made over 18oz!!
Addison is a bit suspicious of this mobile business!
This is by Kenneth Brown baby, and is the Sweet Stitches line,
which I seriously swoon over!

I made her this medallion for the photo shoot she didn't
want to partake in.

What she wanted to do rather than pose.
So many sad, stressful, and tragic events have been occurring around me lately, and although I have had my fair share of drama and suffering these past six months and beyond, deep down inside and often on the surface I feel severely BLESSED and THANKFUL for the life I have had. Sometimes I still feel sorry for myself (it's like a knee-jerk reaction) but when I look at Addison and I see how she gazes at me from her stark grayish-hazel eyes, when I see that giant gummy smile, when I SEE HER in any capacity-- I know why I am alive and I am GRATEFUL. I have a ton less freedom, a lot of responsibility, some moments in which I am spent, but I ALSO HAVE BOUNDLESS LOVE and LIFE, which is more valuable than anything else I could imagine.

Happy half/un birthday to my stunning sage Addison Rose.

I would say she enjoyed the day!

S.M.I.L.E.//L.7: Early Days Uniform

In case no one told you, there is a mom uniform that you will don in the early days, weeks, maybe months. For the first month of Addison's life I predominantly lived in: PAJAMAS. Since it was winter when she was born I often wore pajama sets with button down fronts (which were rarely buttoned since I was non-stop nursing!)

Exhibit A. There are no flattering pictures of me for the first two months
of Addison's life--or should I say, my full-time mom life.

At first I was down about the fact that I barely brushed my hair and lived in pj's (albeit some cute ones) for weeks--but I quickly understood one of my first mommy milestones: letting go of vanity for the tiniest of periods in order to enjoy making my life solely about a newborn. That time went by super fast, and there will be days that we spend in our pj's, but they won't ever be worn as proudly.

Exhibit B. New moms are a lot like rock stars: Messy hair. Up all night.
Little sleep. Dazed look in the eye. Hanging with cute babes. Oh yeah!

To add to this: If you are nursing, you will be half-naked all of the time in those early weeks. Who has time to keep putting on clothes when there is a baby at your booby for at least 12 out of the 24 hours you are granted in your day? I am not going to post those pictures, but those days happened too.

What a family is...

Is a family ever broken that was never together to begin with?

Addison @ 2 weeks old

When I decided to have Addison I knew that I would essentially be a single mother. I can’t say I fully accepted that fact and thus didn’t (and still don’t) puff up over the pride that some carry with that decision. Single parenting wasn’t a posh ideology for me; it was never part of the plan, but wasn’t enough for me to choose not to be a mother either. I WANTED motherhood, but moreover I wanted FAMILY. A big one. A loving one. I swore I would one day do it ‘RIGHT’—I would return to what I consider the nostalgic focus on the family unit, I would devote my life to being a partner and a ‘professional parent’. It was, and still IS my ultimate dream to have a warm, loving, stable family unit though I never had an example of one in my own life. It wouldn’t be enough to describe my family as a broken one unless we upped that definition to fit the nuances of the word. More appropriately mine was broken, reattached, broken some more, renovated, destroyed, reconstructed…mercurial mayhem and extensions of love.

Addison @ 2/12 months. First ZOO experience!

But what is family really? Is Addison part of a broken family or a piece-meal one? She has a mother, a father, plenty of aunts and uncles, four times the grandparents I had, and a built-in network of friends to grow up with. Yet, like a lot of modern families, there is a lack of unity or perhaps we unite simply for the love of her. Her day to day involves she and I. I spend twenty-four hours a day with her every day and love her more and more each hour. This is not to say it is always ‘easy’, but it IS joyful. It IS what I consider family because the love is constant, pure, undying, and secure. There is laughter, comfort, routine, SECURITY. There isn’t any ego clouding my vision—just the beauty that radiates from the smile of my daughter. To me, that is the definition of family. Not just ‘relations’ of some sort or other.

Addison @ 7 weeks.
First visit to the Tibetan Museum and making an offering to the Buddha

To be clear, I am devoted to my bloodline as much as I know how to be. However, throughout adolescence all the way to my present near-thirty I have sought out extensions—other committed like-minded creatures to be part of a sangha. Sometimes family ‘obligations’ (I often consider it drama) kept me from developing in the way that I would have liked…but finally I have learned the true nature of family. So rather than going on a ‘woe-is-me-fest’ I will share a piece of liberation. Family is love, support, understanding, commitment. Family is not simply about genetics, marriage, history. Those things are important, but do not embody what it takes to have a successful family. Never let ‘family’ convince you that it’s okay to be abusive in any way because they are your blood. This is part of an ugly cycle and you can break it if you understand that you are being fed an illusion. Do not feel like you are less of a family because society says you are missing parts. I know I need to remind myself of these things quite often, but I am deeply aware that I have more love in my home (which consists of "only" myself and a baby), than was ever even imagined in the house of seven (plus dogs) I grew up in. My family extends to all of those who regularly share love and energy, who bring inspiration, joy, and show they are committed to being loving.

Thank you to my sangha of people who love and support Addison and I, near and far, blood or not-- I am blessed to know you. Here is to growth and love and experiences to come!

Wonder-full Weekend//July 22-24.2011

I love full weekends in which there is tons to look forward to (albeit somewhat exhausting considering the heat and my general anxiety)--it brings me so much happiness to give Addison so many experiences and people to watch. This weekend involved new milestones, old friends revisited, play dates, a local 'festival', and another successful gathering of mamas-to-be.

Sadly I forgot to take actual pool pictures but I did snap Addy in the
cute bathing suit her cousin Paulie picked out.
Friday July 22: Addison was invited to her first 'pool party' (four mamas and babes hanging and lunching just because) and had her first big-person-pool experience. She was instantly enchanted by the comforting waters, kicked, and later napped in my arms while I mostly bobbed around and enjoyed the respite from the heat. Later that day we so happened to get together with an old friend who has been living in Shanghai for the last two years and met for coffee at The Full Cup (Staten Island's most happening spot right now--and where it seemed everyone did in fact know my name).  I think I was heat drunk because I forgot to take pictures!! I had Addison's car seat in the empty vintage bathtub randomly housed in the midst of the front area's couches for some time. She mostly napped and people-watched while we caught up on lost times.

VAN DUZER DAYS! (photo by our friend and local music legend Matt Wilson)
Saturday July 23: One of my favorite happenings on the island is Van Duzer Days (here is the 2009 entry from my alternate blog--2010's report has so far been skipped over because of my 'I was pregnant and thus lapsed on all blogging while I adjusted to reality' spell). One of the most culturally rich blocks is closed off for the day and there is live art, craft activities (which I am usually hosting for children), music, vintage, and all around straight up old school FUN! Last year I was joyous knowing that the next year's events would include me with a baby, and last year's marked when I told some of my most awesome friends about my pregnancy. For the next three Saturdays Addy and I will get to enjoy some summer freedom and celebration, but here are some highlights from this week:
I was so excited to see this new ice cream parlor open up. It is far more
appropriate than some of the other odd things it has been (like a psychic shop).
I had the Cappuccino Kahlua Calypso and it was divine.
Sweet details!! A little kid's corner!
An abacus!! (And the lovely Ella on counting)

Little V matched the paints so well
The darling and talented Rob Carey
The dynamic Nick Williams and the Anteaters
Captain Ahab and the Sea Crakcens
(the island's premiere and only surf rock band!)
Live art in the streets! Addison was mesmerized by this one!
The immensely multi-talented Chris Sorrentino
I need to get the artist's name!
It was hours before I noticed this random oddity outside of an estate sale building.
The best part about the day was all of the love Addison and I received!!
Sunday July 24: This marked the second "Fearless Birth" free class (put together by Birth Right Now) hosted in my apartment. Until the business finds a suitable center to grow I am using my space (which is pretty spacious and very comfy) to hold an exciting amount of classes. The excitement I have is immeasurable since I not only get to help support a dear friend who I deeply admire, but I also get to support something I feel IMMENSELY passionate about: motherhood and children. This week's class brought together another set of expectant mamas that I was so happy to socialize with and tell my story to. For me these workshops never get old because the information is so pertinent, the community and love so palpable, and the positive energy so necessary. Women need support and camaraderie, especially during the transition to motherhood. I love the feeling of 'paying it forward' and having the opportunity to partake in beauty.

After the class, Addy and I were visited by her Granna Iva and Uncle Chris which was so so nice. We ate some delicious pizza from my favorite local place Marie's and they got to see Addison do all of her 'baby tricks'. The two of us were so exhausted from all of the beauty, love, and excitement over the weekend that it carried over into a rather lazy monday.

Here's to community!!!
